Just as Lin Zhou and his two men were about to charge out, a figure suddenly appeared beside them and gave them quite a fright.
Fu Jie was holding a long wooden stick. Facing the two sneaky men, he swung it down without the slightest hesitation.
The two men didn’t even have a chance to cry out before they were knocked unconscious.
Lin Zhou was stunned.
Was this really the same Finance Director Fu who looked refined and delicate?
Fu Jie gripped the stick tightly, still not satisfied. He kicked one of the unconscious men.
How dare they hurt the Young Miss!
They must have a death wish!
At that moment, he keenly sensed someone behind him and whipped around, meeting Lin Zhou’s astonished gaze.
“Assistant Lin, what are you doing here?”
“Finance Director Fu, shouldn’t I be asking you that? Why are you here in the middle of the night? And you’re even—”
His eyes traveled up and down Fu Jie’s body. One of his feet was wearing a slipper, while the other was in a leather shoe. The corner of Lin Zhou’s mouth twitched.
“That’s quite a unique look.”
Fu Jie felt awkward under his scrutiny. He dropped the stick and changed the subject.
“These two were planning to harm the Young Miss and Mr. Jiang. They’ve been following them ever since.”
He adjusted the frame of his glasses and looked meaningfully at Lin Zhou.
“Our Young Miss is kind-hearted and incredibly likable. These two were probably after Mr. Jiang.”
Lin Zhou couldn’t help rolling his eyes inwardly.
Our Young Miss… our Young Miss…
He sounded awfully familiar.
Miss Zhou was also their future CEO’s wife!
Was he proud of himself?
“You two, go!”
Lin Zhou waved at the two men behind him.
They immediately stepped forward, stuffed the two unconscious men into burlap sacks, and dragged them to a nearby corner, where they gave them a thorough beating.
The two men had originally been knocked unconscious, but the pain soon dragged them awake.
When they opened their eyes, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. They could only hope it was some kind of hallucination.
“Ow! Stop… stop hitting us! You’ll kill us!”
“Please, have mercy!”
Lin Zhou walked over, yanked one of the men’s hair, and asked coldly, “Tell me. Who sent you?”
The two men were beaten black and blue, grimacing in pain, but they still stubbornly insisted, “No one sent us! Zhou Sui'an fired us for no reason. We only wanted to scare his sister!”
“Still refusing to talk?”
Lin Zhou gave a cold laugh and released his grip. “Take them away. Once we’re back in Tangcheng, we’ll have plenty of ways to make them talk.”
His men immediately dragged the two away and disappeared around the corner.
Lin Zhou rolled his sore arm and turned toward the car parked by the roadside.
As he passed Fu Jie, he honked the horn.
“Finance Director Fu, get in!”
Lin Zhou looked him up and down again. Unable to hold back, he suppressed a laugh and said, “One leather shoe and one slipper. Very fashionable.”
Fu Jie’s face instantly flushed red with embarrassment.
“I left in a hurry.”
“Want a ride? I can drop you somewhere.”
“Would that be too much trouble? Don’t you still have to pick up Mr. Jiang and the Young Miss?”
“Fine! Staying in the same car with that couple would be awkward anyway!”
The moment he finished speaking, Lin Zhou stepped on the gas. The car shot away, leaving only a trail of exhaust behind.
“Cough, cough, cough!”
Fu Jie choked on the fumes.
He stared at the departing car, then glanced at the empty road around him, completely dumbfounded.
He had only been being polite!
It was so late, and this place was so remote. Where was he supposed to find a taxi?
Fu Jie stood there and watched the car disappear, gnashing his teeth in anger.
Just as the saying went, a crooked beam made for crooked rafters.
Jiang Zongyan looked down on everyone, and his subordinate was no better!
The usually refined and elegant man finally spat out a curse.
“Damn it!”
—
Lin Zhou was feeling incredibly pleased with himself.
Who did these people think they were, trying to steal his boss’s wife?!
He cheerfully pulled up beside Jiang Zongyan and Zhou Suisui.
“Boss, Miss Zhou, get in.”
Jiang Zongyan opened the car door and carried Zhou Suisui inside.
Zhou Suisui was barefoot. When her feet touched the cold floor mat, her toes instinctively curled.
Jiang Zongyan frowned and immediately grabbed her ankle with both hands.
“Ah! What are you doing?!”
Her expression changed, and she hurriedly glanced toward the driver’s seat.
Lin Zhou was still right there watching…
Under her shocked gaze, Jiang Zongyan calmly held her delicate foot and placed it on his thigh.
He lowered his head. When his eyes fell on the scratches marring her fair skin, his voice instantly tightened.
“You’re hurt.”
“I scraped them by accident when I was running just now.”
Feeling embarrassed, Zhou Suisui tugged at her pant leg.
Under his heated gaze, she felt extremely self-conscious.
“Lin Zhou, go to the hospital.” Jiang Zongyan lifted his eyes and ordered coldly.
“No, no!”
Zhou Suisui hurriedly waved her hands. “It’s just a minor injury. We can buy some medicine at a pharmacy and put some povidone-iodine on it.”
She grabbed his sleeve and gave it a pitiful little tug.
“I’m so tired. I want to sleep.”
As if to prove her point, she yawned.
Her little head leaned against Jiang Zongyan’s chest, and her eyes were already struggling to stay open.
Seeing the exhaustion on her face, Jiang Zongyan gently pulled her into his arms and said in a low, husky voice, “Go to sleep. We’ll be at the hotel soon.”
“Mm.”
Half-asleep, Zhou Suisui closed her eyes.
Jiang Zongyan wrapped an arm around her shoulders and instructed Lin Zhou, “Stop by the pharmacy and get some medicine. Drive slowly. Don’t wake her.”
“Yes, Boss.”
