The moment Song Xinya walked out of the hospital room after successfully securing the help of the internationally renowned physician Sheng Changpu, she felt refreshed and invigorated.
Sheng Changpu had already agreed to treat Qin Yuhe’s hand. According to the original plan, Song Xinya began carrying out the second step.
This was the most luxurious private hospital in the country.
It was owned by Han Jingyi.
Before coming, she had done her research. Han Jingyi was seeing patients in the cardiothoracic surgery department that day.
She sat quietly in one of the chairs in the department’s consultation area and waited.
It was almost time for the doctors to finish work.
After a while, the number of patients in the waiting area gradually dwindled, until she was the only one left.
The doctors filed out of their consultation rooms one after another, ending their day’s work.
Song Xinya glanced toward the specialist consultation room where Han Jingyi was working. The lights inside were still on.
In the empty, quiet surroundings, she heard the faint sound of a woman crying inside the room.
“What should I do?”
“Dr. Han, what should I do?”
“My daughter is still so young. I don’t want her to die.”
Doctors saw life and death every day. Those in the profession had to maintain compassion for their patients while also remaining rational and learning not to be overwhelmed by the suffering of the world.
So many patients came to the hospital every day. Who among them wasn’t deserving of sympathy?
Every family had its own troubles, and everyone had their own difficulties. How could anyone help them all?
A doctor saw dozens of patients a day and dealt with all kinds of difficult illnesses, as well as the patients’ negative emotions. After a full day of work, it was inevitable that their patience would run thin and that their tone might become less than pleasant.
Yet Han Jingyi remained gentle and kind toward every patient.
The mother of this final patient had already been crying in his office for half an hour, but from beginning to end, Han Jingyi had comforted her with extraordinary patience and warmth.
He understood the ways of the world, yet still chose to treat others well. He had experienced its cynicism, yet retained his innocence.
He understood reality without becoming materialistic, and he could laugh at himself while remaining true to who he was.
Han Jingyi had his own principles for dealing with people: regardless of whether others were kind, he himself had to be kind. Understanding other people’s difficulties was also a way of treating himself well.
After a while, the patient’s mother came out of the consultation room, filled with gratitude toward Han Jingyi.
“Dr. Han, thank you so much. You’re the great benefactor of our entire family.”
“I’ve never met a doctor as wonderful as you. You’re the best doctor I’ve ever seen.”
As she spoke, she began to kneel before him.
Han Jingyi reached out and stopped her. “There’s no need for that. Just take good care of your child.”
After seeing the patient’s mother off, Han Jingyi turned back and walked straight over to Song Xinya.
The man had thick brows, a high nose, and sharply defined features. Even from the unflattering angle of looking up at him from below, he was still strikingly handsome.
Song Xinya asked, “You saw me just now?”
Han Jingyi replied, “It would be hard not to notice you the moment you appeared.”
She was so beautiful and eye-catching that she seemed even more dazzling than the sun.
Song Xinya rose from her chair and glanced toward the entrance. “Did you pay for that patient’s treatment out of your own pocket again?”
“I just lent a hand,” Han Jingyi said.
“You saved someone’s life. How could you call that merely lending a hand? If they made a statue of you, countless people would burn incense and worship it, calling you Saint Han.”
Han Jingyi looked Song Xinya up and down. She had grown thinner again. Her face had never been large to begin with, but now it looked even smaller and more delicate—barely larger than his palm.
Her complexion, however, had improved.
He asked, “Have you been deliberately dieting again lately?”
“No.”
“Then why have you lost more weight?”
Qin Yuhe had worn her down.
For three days and three nights, he had held her down and made love to her. She had cried out and moaned, kissing him passionately while bracing herself against the bed and enduring his stormlike thrusts. With such intense physical exertion, how could she not have lost weight?
A trace of embarrassment appeared on Song Xinya’s face. “Nothing special. I’ve just been exercising a lot lately, so I lost some weight.”
“With that much exercise, what kind of workout have you been doing?” Han Jingyi asked.
“Sumo wrestling?”
That sport involved a lot of collisions too.
“Not many women like sumo wrestling,” Han Jingyi said.
If she were doing it with Qin Yuhe, though, there would probably be quite a few.
“I know a thing or two about sumo wrestling as well. We can try it together sometime.”
Song Xinya waved both hands repeatedly. “No need, no need, no need.”
“Don’t be so polite. We can play together and relax.”
“Really, there’s no need. Really, no need. Really.”
Seeing how strongly she resisted, Han Jingyi stopped pressing the matter.
Song Xinya changed the subject. “Brother Jingyi, I came to see you today because there’s something I’d like your help with.”
“I knew you wouldn’t visit unless you needed something. If you had no reason to come, you wouldn’t have shown up.”
Song Xinya scratched her head awkwardly.
“Still, I’m happy that when you needed help, you thought of asking me instead of someone else.”
He looked at her. “What is it? Just tell me.”
“It’s about my husband.”
The hand hanging at Han Jingyi’s side spasmed slightly.
His voice remained calm. “What about him?”
“I’ve already persuaded Sheng Changpu. He’s willing to treat my husband’s hand.”
Shock and confusion appeared on Han Jingyi’s face.
He was shocked that she had managed, entirely on her own and without his help, to convince the internationally renowned physician—the most conceited, stubborn, and eccentric man in the field—to agree to treat her husband.
He was confused because she had already managed to persuade Sheng Changpu. Why had she come to him?
Song Xinya said, “I understand Qin Yuhe. He has a strong sense of pride and a fiercely independent nature. He loves and hates intensely, and he is extremely protective of the people close to him. He will never forgive anyone who has hurt his family.”
“If he finds out that Sheng Changpu is treating his hand, he won’t accept it.”
“So I thought we could tell him that your hospital has a partnership with the United States and can provide burn patients with the most advanced treatment available. That way, he’ll agree to the treatment and cooperate with it.”
That would also mean Qin Yuhe would never know how much Song Xinya had done to get his hand treated.
Han Jingyi asked, “After doing so much for the person you love, don’t you want him to know?”
Song Xinya countered, “When you’re good to someone, is it only so they’ll repay you?”
Han Jingyi froze for a moment.
No.
Just as he had buried his feelings for Song Xinya deep in his heart and chosen to stand quietly in the shadows, protecting her without ever expecting anything in return, Song Xinya was doing the same for Qin Yuhe.
Love was about giving, not taking.
Giving was not a sacrifice. It was as natural and abundant as sunlight.
When she gave him a flower, it wasn’t because she hoped he would give her one in return. She simply wanted him to feel happy when he saw it.
“All right. I’ll help you,” Han Jingyi said.
Everything was now in place. Next came the treatment for Qin Yuhe’s hand.
Song Xinya returned to Zijin Huafu while it was still early—only seven in the evening.
At this hour, Qin Yuhe usually hadn’t come home yet.
But the moment Song Xinya stepped into the villa courtyard, she saw Qin Yuhe.
He was standing at the living room entrance, his eyes fixed on the gate, as though he had been waiting a long time for someone to appear.
Song Xinya ran toward him, her steps light and cheerful. When she reached him, she opened her arms, jumped up, and leaped into his embrace, wrapping her slender, fair legs around his waist.
“Husband, catch me!”
Qin Yuhe reached out and caught her, his hands securely supporting her buttocks.
Song Xinya: “Honey, did you see the sun today?”
Qin Yuhe: “It’s cloudy today. There’s no sun.”
Song Xinya planted a kiss on his lips. “From now on, I’ll be your sun, shining for you forever.”
