The End of the World: Forcibly Detained by Six Judges

Chapter 80

The trailing sound dissolved into the air, spreading silently to every corner.

Jiang Nuan stood where she was, unmoving.

She could feel the warmth of Ye Que's palm hovering over her upper arm, that small patch of heat pressing against her skin as if it carried weight.

It wasn't heavy, but she couldn't ignore it.

She lifted her eyes to meet his gaze. Ye Que's eyes were hidden in the half-lit shadows, his emotions unreadable.

"How exactly do we do this?" she heard her own voice, calmer than she had expected.

She wanted to try to control her body's instinctive reactions.

Ye Que was silent for a few seconds.

"You can try not to resist," his voice was half a notch lower than before. "And instead, adapt to me."

With that, he leaned forward slightly.

It wasn't any deliberate pressure; he just leaned in a little, but given his height—a man over six foot four—when he leaned forward, his shadow cast down directly from above her head.

Broad shoulders, long arms. When he stepped in, her entire figure was shrouded in his shadow.

Jiang Nuan's back foot instinctively stepped half a pace backward.

Ye Que stopped and didn't continue closing in, even pulling back that inch of distance, looking down at her. "You stepped back again just now."

"...A reflex," she coughed. "Let's try again!"

Ye Que said nothing, but she could feel his gaze lingering on her for several seconds, as if confirming that she was truly ready.

His right hand rose, slowly. His index finger extended first, then the remaining fingers opened one by one, palm facing her. His fingers stopped just below her jaw, less than an inch away, not touching.

"Is this okay?"

She stared at that hovering hand, at the long, slender fingers, the thin calluses at the base of his thumb—marks left from years of holding a gun. His nails were trimmed clean and neat, his knuckles distinct.

This was a hand that had killed many people.

At this moment, it paused in front of her, waiting quietly for her nod.

She glanced again at the face so close to hers.

Deep brow bone, straight nose, thin lips pressed together.

She nodded, the movement tiny, as if afraid she'd change her mind, finishing it hastily and then going still.

Ye Que's fingertips came down.

The moment they touched, Jiang Nuan gave a slight shudder.

His fingers pressed against her jaw, applying a gentle force, tilting her face up just a little.

The angle aligned perfectly with his eyes.

His pupils were very dark, and reflected in them was her own image—tiny, framed entirely by him.

He leaned down.

His breath came first.

Warm, brushing past the tip of her nose, her upper lip.

Then his lips.

Very soft.

His lips only brushed faintly against the corner of her mouth.

A restrained exploration.

Jiang Nuan's shoulders tensed.

Ye Que paused to gauge her reaction.

She didn't push him away.

Then, the second kiss that fell was directly over her lips.

He traced the contour gently.

Upper lip. Lower lip. The curve of the cupid's bow.

He kissed slowly, leaving a gap between each touch, allowing air to seep in through the spaces.

Jiang Nuan's fingers clenched tightly at the fabric of Ye Que's chest.

Then, the hand supporting her jaw slid around to the back of her head.

His fingertips threaded through her hair, his palm cradling her skull, applying slight pressure.

Pressing inward.

Jiang Nuan's head was forced to tilt back a little, and the angle of their lips deepened.

No longer just a faint touch.

Ye Que's other arm curled around her waist.

His arm tightened, his palm pressing against her side, pulling her half a step closer to him.

She could feel his heartbeat, through two layers of fabric, heavy and solid, pressing against her.

He deepened the kiss, little by little.

It wasn’t impatient or forceful.

But there was a crushing, inescapable sense of control.

Jiang Nuan’s legs hit the sofa.

She was guided backward, her center of gravity shifting, her waist pressing against the sofa’s edge.

Ye Que’s arm around her tightened, and his other hand slid from the back of her head to the side of her neck.

The soft fabric bore her weight, and his half-lowered body blocked out all the light.

She was entirely in his shadow.

His broad shoulders framed her in the sofa, his arms braced on either side of her, the black fabric of his clothes spreading into a vast swath of darkness in her vision.

Jiang Nuan’s fingers pressed against his chest.

She could feel the warmth and solidity beneath the fabric, the outline of his pectorals.

And his heartbeat.

Heavier and faster than before.

His fingers on her waist tightened slowly, just a little.

They sank into the soft flesh of her side, then held back, not going further.

That pressure seemed to be holding something down.

His breath came rough against her lips, his forelock brushing her forehead.

He was holding himself back with extreme effort.

Jiang Nuan could see it.

And it was precisely under that pressure that she calmed instead.

Enduring wasn’t enough—as long as she was the one being approached, her body language would always read as forbearance.

She needed to take the offensive.

The moment that thought surfaced in her mind, Jiang Nuan moved.

Her fingers closed around the wrist he had pressed against her side.

Ye Que’s movements paused for a second.

She clearly felt the skin over the calloused ridge on his wrist tighten under her fingers.

He thought she was going to push him away.

But she didn’t.

She held his wrist, and at the same time twisted her body to the side.

The move wasn’t clean, but the intent was clear—she was reversing their positions.

Ye Que read her intention the instant she began.

His body offered no resistance.

His tall frame yielded to her force, tipping forward, his center of gravity shifting. His broad back slammed into the sofa cushions with a dull thud.

Jiang Nuan followed the momentum and swung herself up.

Her knees pressed down on either side of him, one hand bracing against his wide shoulder.

Their positions were reversed.

Her palm lay flat on his shoulder, and through the combat suit’s fabric, she could feel the contours of the muscle beneath—hard, hot, rising and falling slightly with his breath.

She looked down at him from above.

Her hair slipped from behind her ears, hanging down between them.

Ye Que froze for an instant.

Those dark eyes widened slightly.

His hands stayed at his sides—he didn’t push her away, didn’t grab her either.

She looked down at him.

Ye Que lay back on the sofa, his black hair spread across the cream-colored cushion, making his face look even paler, his features colder.

His shoulders sank into the soft padding, and the collar of his black combat suit had pulled open a bit from the earlier movement, revealing a slice of collarbone and the taut lines of his neck muscles.

The arms that had been braced around her now hung loosely at his sides.

He just lay there beneath her, watching her quietly.

She noticed the bob of his Adam’s apple, the depth in his gaze—he was waiting for her.

And she found that, in that moment, her tension dissolved.

But she wasn’t sure whether this counted as completion of the mission, or as something else entirely.

Then, something stirred in those deep black eyes—restraint, forbearance, something he had buried deepest, seeping out through the cracks.

A breath, heavier by a beat, escaped his throat.

That soft sound fell from his slightly parted lips into the quiet room.

The difference in their builds was magnified to its fullest in this position.

His waist was narrower than she had imagined, but the area of his body covering her was far larger than she had estimated.

She looked down at him, breath quickening.

He looked up at her, chest rising and falling slowly.

As if waiting for her next move.

Whatever her next move was, he would accept it all.
