Xie Tangning lightly slapped her own forehead, as if annoyed with herself for letting her guard down.
“I really deserve that. It’s my fault!”
Lu Huaiyu watched the little girl give herself a slap as gentle as a caress and couldn’t help finding it amusing.
This little brat had love-yourself-to-the-bone practically engraved in her DNA. She couldn’t even bring herself to slap herself with any real force.
Looking at the several cars following behind them, Xie Changyu spoke in a deliberately provocative tone. “Big Brother, are your driving skills good enough to shake them off?”
Xie Changyu’s faith in his older brother was downright blind. In his eyes, with Big Brother around, nothing was worth fearing.
That said, with those lips of his—red as deadly hemlock—he just loved teasing his brother.
Lu Huaiyu narrowed his eyes at the cars in the rearview mirror. “What a stupid question. Do you think I’ve spent the past two months practicing for nothing?”
Ever since their parents had given him a racing club, he had been going there to drive a few laps and hone his skills whenever he had free time.
All to prevent the fate described in his little sister’s original story, where the car lost control and ultimately ended in a fatal crash.
Xie Tangning was just as blindly confident in her big brother. “Big Brother, I’m buckled in. Let’s start your grand display of driving skills!”
Lu Huaiyu clicked his tongue. “What display? Safety comes first, got it? There’s so much traffic on this road. It’s dangerous!”
Who knew what sort of ridiculous scenario this chūnibyō brat had imagined again? The cars behind them were only following them for now. They had no intention of causing a public crash that would kill all three siblings.
After all, this was a society ruled by law. If they caused a major incident in a busy urban area, then no matter how powerful the people behind them were, they would still end up behind bars.
Even if Yisen was desperate to break into the Chinese market and destroy the Lu and Xie families, he still didn’t dare be so blatant.
At the very least, he would force them onto a road with little traffic before arranging an “accident.”
Xie Tangning let out an “Oh,” her expression faintly disappointed.
Xie Changyu turned around, grabbed her by the shoulders, and shook her hard. “Tsk, what’s with that look? Can you wake up?”
“This is reality, not some anime world where you can cough up three pounds of blood and still survive! If we reenact a high-speed life-or-death chase here, we’re genuinely going to meet the King of Hell!”
He knew his little sister’s chūnibyō tendencies all too well. At fifteen or sixteen, she watched enough hot-blooded anime every day to fill an entire warehouse.
As a result, she was constantly playing out dramatic, over-the-top scenes in her head. Though, to be fair, he was exactly the same kind of person.
But he would never admit it!
As long as he didn’t say anything, he had no chūnibyō spirit whatsoever!
After being shaken twice, Xie Tangning let her head loll to one side and stuck out her tongue, pretending to have been shaken to death. She perfectly recreated the way an anime character looked after being shaken dizzy.
Xie Changyu: “…”
What a hopeless chūnibyō girl!
Lu Huaiyu glanced at the two children in the rearview mirror, who still had the energy to fool around, and the corners of his mouth lifted in indulgent amusement.
With their mentality, they could succeed at anything!
“Call Mom and Dad and tell them we’ll be late getting home for lunch.”
“We need to lead them somewhere more open. If we don’t give them a chance to make a move, how are we supposed to send them to prison?”
Once Big Brother gave the order, the two chūnibyō troublemakers immediately settled down, though an inexplicable excitement still stirred inside them.
Children born under the red flag and raised in the spring breeze had never experienced anything like being hunted down. Of course they were thrilled at their first taste of it!
“There are so many cars following us. They must have come prepared,” Xie Tangning said.
“The moment our car left the airport, they followed us. That means they must have used the livestream to figure out our itinerary and waited for us at the airport.”
After saying this, Xie Tangning glanced at her second brother. A flicker of excitement flashed through Xie Changyu’s eyes.
“Our family estate is in the suburbs, far from the city. And since we’re in China, there’s no way those people have firearms.”
“I’m guessing that as soon as we leave the city, they’ll surround us and try to beat us up.”
“Big Brother, take another road and lead them to the villa at the foot of Lingshan! There are hardly any people there, and it’s spacious.”
The small villa at the foot of Lingshan had been purchased by Lu Qiwu back when Xie Tangning had become obsessed with mountain climbing and often ran up Lingshan with her friends to watch the sunrise.
To support Xie Tangning’s hobby, Lu Qiwu had deliberately bought the villa. It was far from the city and had a beautiful environment.
Whenever the whole family felt like it, they would stay there for a few days or go camping and enjoy some quality family time over the weekend.
Lu Huaiyu nodded. “That was exactly what I had in mind. I’ve already notified Huang Dong. He’ll arrange everything.”
Xie Tangning instinctively began loosening up her joints. “I don’t care how many people there are. I urgently need to find out whether all my training has made me capable of taking on two people at once!”
“I refuse to believe I can’t beat that bunch of nobodies when I can’t even beat experts as formidable as Instructor Mo and Instructor Yan!”
She could figure out with her toes that anyone daring to act like gangsters in China would most likely be hiring street thugs and local toughs.
As for the others, Lu Huaiyu’s people had already dealt with them. Not one of them would escape being sent away to enjoy free room and board at the government’s expense.
Some of them were truck drivers suffering from terminal illnesses who would happen to “fall asleep at the wheel” on the road, for example.
The cars following them were also there because Lu Huaiyu had deliberately allowed them to follow. Only by bringing everything into the open could they make a case against the people behind it.
Anything Xie Tangning could figure out, Xie Changyu could figure out too. After all, being a husky at heart didn’t mean he was stupid.
“Then I’ll have to show off my skills today. What a shame my fans won’t get to see me in action.”
Lu Huaiyu felt two dark lines form on his forehead. “Are you two insane? Someone literally paid to have us killed!”
“This isn’t a fight outside the school gates after class! Can’t you act normal for once?”
The two younger ones ignored him completely, still immersed in the grand action movie playing out in their heads.
Twenty minutes later, the car was traveling along a deserted suburban road.
The cars that had been following them all this time seemed to realize they had already been exposed. They began accelerating, preparing to force them off the road.
Lu Huaiyu took the opportunity to show off his driving skills and left the cars behind for quite a distance.
Then he rammed the rear of the car in front of them, making it look as though he had been forced to stop.
The moment their vehicle came to a halt, several burly men climbed out of the other cars, each carrying a steel pipe. They were all over six feet tall on average.
Their arms were covered in tattoos. At first glance, they really did look like gangsters straight out of a movie.
The three siblings remained completely calm inside the car. Not one of them had any intention of getting out.
Xie Tangning sucked in a breath. “One, two, three, four… twelve people. They really think highly of the three of us.”
“Aren’t they supposed to be street thugs? Why are they trained enforcers? This is nothing like what I imagined!”
Xie Changyu swallowed as well. “I take back everything I said earlier! My skills are pretty impressive, but even the best fighter can’t beat twelve people at once!”
Lu Huaiyu unwrapped a strawberry gummy and tossed it into his mouth to calm his nerves. Then he casually handed a bag of chocolate-flavored candy and one of mango-flavored candy to the two troublemakers in the back seat.
