"Miss, are these chicks for sale or did you just buy them?"
Someone quick-handed had already lifted a corner of the cloth, revealing the densely packed, adorable little chicks inside.
"With so many, they must be for sale," the person said confidently, and everyone else saw it too.
"Miss, did you bring these chicks from the countryside to sell? How much? I’ve been wanting to raise some, and these look really good."
"Ten cents each, and buy ten get one free."
Seeing that quite a few people were interested, Yang Yufen thought for a moment before quoting the price.
"Really? Buy ten and get one free?"
The passengers on the bus couldn’t help but feel tempted.
"Yes, but these chicks are just hatched. When you get home, you’ll need to feed them some warm water first. I don’t have anything to carry them in—I originally planned to take them home and prepare properly, so I’m selling them a bit cheaper now."
"Then I’ll take a dollar’s worth. I brought a vegetable basket; I’ll just wash it when I get home."
Someone immediately handed over a dollar and a basket.
Yang Yufen took the money and the basket, lifted a corner of the coarse cloth, and reached in to grab the chicks. Each one was lively and squirming. She counted out ten, then added one more, neatly placing eleven inside.
"Miss, where are you getting off? I want some too, but I didn’t bring anything to carry them. I’ll take fifty—can you save them for me?"
Seeing how many people were buying, someone else grew anxious.
"You want that many? If everyone takes a share, there won’t be many left!"
Hearing someone ask for so many, the competition grew fiercer.
The person who wanted fifty quickly took off their outer shirt.
"Miss, miss, put them in here! I’ll carry them home like this. I’m getting off soon anyway."
Before Yang Yufen and Aunt Wang even reached their stop, the basket was empty. After getting off the bus, the two women exchanged glances and burst into laughter.
"We made ten dollars extra—let’s split it evenly."
With over a hundred chicks sold, including the free ones, they had earned five dollars more than their usual daily wage.
"Let’s do this again next time."
Aunt Wang was just as delighted, clutching her share.
Five dollars could buy a big chunk of meat.
The two older women happily headed home to cook. When Yang Yufen saw the extra items at home, she smiled.
"Mom, we’re back."
"Grandma, grandma! We’re home! We took so many pretty pictures today!"
Yang Yufen had just started preparing dinner when she heard the voices. She turned to see the family of four walking in.
"Wonderful! Nian, you look absolutely stunning. Young people should dress up more—my, my, so elegant! Nian has such great taste."
Yang Yufen’s eyes lit up. She had always known her daughter-in-law was beautiful, but this level of refinement was a first.
Qin Nian lowered her head slightly, a little embarrassed.
"Mom."
"Have you all eaten yet?"
"Mom, I’ll cook. We also bought some ready-made dishes. You should rest. Nian got something for you too."
Shen Xianjun volunteered, lifting the bags in his hands.
"Alright, you handle dinner."
Yang Yufen didn’t stand on ceremony—sons were meant to be put to work.
"We couldn’t take you with us today, but next time, you should come along."
Qin Nian led Yang Yufen inside as she spoke.
"You and Xianjun are husband and wife—you’ll spend your lives together. I’m already old. I know you’re filial, but young people should live their own lives. Did you have fun today? The kids look thrilled."
Yang Yufen patted Qin Nian’s hand.
"Grandma, we had the best day! We picked out Mom’s dress, and she took us to the park! We even went boating—Dad was amazing, our boat was the fastest!"
Li Wu excitedly recounted their day, his little head bobbing as Li Wen occasionally chimed in.
Yang Yufen listened with a smile, thoroughly pleased.
"Mom, this is for you. Don’t save it—wear it. I also got something for Teacher and his wife."
"Good, good. I’m so fortunate. Today really is a blessed day."
Yang Yufen held the clothes up to herself, then went to change and came back to show Qin Nian.
"Fits perfectly! Next time there’s a wedding, I’ll wear this."
Beaming, she admired herself before changing back.
"Take the kids to deliver your teacher’s gifts now, or you’ll be too busy later."
Yang Yufen didn’t want to delay them.
"Alright."
Qin Nian nodded. The twins eagerly grabbed the bags and took her hands, one on each side.
Yang Yufen went to her room briefly before heading to the kitchen.
"You did well today. Whose money paid for the clothes?"
At her question, Shen Xianjun paused.
"My allowance covered the kids’ and Nian’s clothes, so I didn’t have much left. But I paid for the park and the groceries."
Yang Yufen nodded, then pulled money from her pocket.
"They say men with money go astray, but you can’t be penniless either. This is for your wife and kids—don’t waste it. Later, buy something for your in-laws and brother-in-law too."
"Mom, I can’t take your money!"
Shen Xianjun stared at the cash in disbelief.
"Whose else would you take? Your wife’s? I raised you—that’s my duty. Your wife isn’t obligated to provide for you."
Yang Yufen huffed.
"Mom, that’s not what I meant. Thank you."
Shen Xianjun accepted the money.
Hearing his gratitude, Yang Yufen’s eyes stung.
"Focus on cooking. I’ll go feed the chickens."
She shoved the money at him and turned away, but once outside, her face broke into a smile, the lump in her throat dissolving.
Shen Xianjun felt the weight of the money in his hand. Taking a deep breath, he tucked it away and returned to cooking.
"Wow, Li Wu, Li Wen, your mom is so pretty!"
Every kid in the compound knew the twins. When they saw them holding hands with a beautiful woman, they crowded around.
"Of course! Our mom is the prettiest!"
The twins’ shared pride peaked at that moment.
Qin Nian let the children lead her around the compound in a grand tour before finally reaching their teacher’s home.
"Grandma! Grandma! Zhenghao, we’re here!"
Li Wu’s loud voice never failed to announce their arrival.
"Wow, Auntie, you look amazing today!"
Hu Zhenghao dashed out to greet them.
"Such a sweet talker. I bought you some clothes—is your grandma home?"
"Yes, yes!"
Hu Zhenghao nodded.
"Don’t tell me you dragged Auntie around the whole compound first?"
He leaned toward the twins.
They grinned, proud and triumphant.
Of course they had to show off their mom! Let everyone envy them!
