Many ability users and refugees died in that earth fissure, but Yan Jiasui was incredibly lucky to survive.
Both she and Wen Ruixin were severely injured.
There were no healing-type ability users in the building, so they had to rely solely on medicine.
Only some low-level ability users were left in the building, and their supplies were constantly depleting. Yan Jiasui originally thought these ability users would leave, but to her surprise, they all stayed.
"Sister Jiasui, your body hasn't recovered yet. You should rest for a while," Wen Ruixin looked at her with concern.
Yan Jiasui smiled at her. "The building is in such chaos right now. We need to find new supplies as soon as possible."
Every day, she followed the other ability users to scavenge for supplies. They didn't find much, but it was just enough to get by.
Yan Jiasui had also brought back the refugees from the earth fissure, and their presence required a lot of medicine.
The original residents of the building already loathed these refugees. Seeing Yan Jiasui waste medicine to save them made everyone deeply dissatisfied.
A man gathered his courage to go see Yan Jiasui.
"Sister Jiasui, why are we still saving those refugees? We don't have many supplies to begin with, and you didn't even like them before, did you?"
If the original residents of the building got injured, what would they do if there wasn't enough medicine?
Yan Jiasui was silent for a moment. "But that day, they really did help us block a huge wave of zombies. They kept their promise and acted as human shields for us."
There were some who fled halfway, but she had also seen the vast majority of the refugees charging at the very front.
The man still didn't understand. "But so what? Didn't they just act as human shields for the supplies? It's not like they were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts."
He grew a little anxious. "Sister Jiasui, we all know you have a good heart, but when you save those people, please consider our current situation. Sister Jiasui, can you stop saving people so recklessly?"
Back then, it was also her indecisiveness that allowed those refugees to stay in the building, and now...
Yan Jiasui looked at him quietly. "You were also someone I saved recklessly, weren't you?"
The man choked on his words.
Yan Jiasui continued, "There are so many ordinary people in the building. I've never made anyone act as a human shield, and I've still let everyone stay here for all these years."
"These refugees actually did something concrete. Can't I bring them back?"
She didn't say the rest of her thoughts out loud.
She could easily throw all the old, weak, sick, and disabled out of the building and only keep those who were useful to her, but she simply couldn't bring herself to do it.
Yan Jiasui looked at the silent man. "If everyone is dissatisfied with me, you can leave at any time. I'm not saying this out of anger."
"You've been in the building for so many years, and you've seen many people come and go. I've never stopped anyone, whether they were ability users or ordinary people."
The man was silent for a long time before finally saying, "I understand, Sister Jiasui."
After the man left, Yan Jiasui lowered her head and continued managing the building's resource allocation.
Wen Ruixin stood by her side, earnestly looking at Yan Jiasui's profile.
She had also been saved by Yan Jiasui back then. At the time, she was hiding all alone in a dilapidated house, surviving by herself for who knew how long, and she hadn't even awakened an ability yet.
Yan Jiasui happened to be scavenging for supplies with a few ability users. Looking at Yan Jiasui, who was leading the group, Wen Ruixin had a premonition that Yan Jiasui would definitely save her.
Under the wary gazes of everyone, she cried and hugged Yan Jiasui's leg, sobbing that she wanted to follow her.
And so, despite the objections of the others, Yan Jiasui brought her back to the building.
Since that day, no matter what incomprehensible decisions Yan Jiasui made, Wen Ruixin would always stand behind her.
After all, she too had been brought back by her when no one else wanted her.
The daytime desert was blindingly bright. Looking out from the window, the distant horizon constantly undulated, looking as if it were melting.
Fine sand was swept up into the air without a single sound.
"What are you thinking about?" a voice suddenly rang out from behind.
Ji Zhaoxi smiled and looked at him. "You finally dare to talk to me?"
Pei Yufeng scoffed, not looking at her. "Why wouldn't I dare to talk to you?"
Ji Zhaoxi snorted. "I wonder who it was that wouldn't even answer when spoken to, just secretly watching me from behind."
She almost thought Pei Yufeng wanted to take revenge on her.
Pei Yufeng leaned lazily to the side, drawing out his words. "Is that so? Watching a moth flutter around in the desert all day is actually quite amusing."
Ji Zhaoxi choked on her words.
It would be better if he just kept his mouth shut.
Ji Zhaoxi looked at everything before her with some confusion. She didn't know where to go next, nor did she know if they were going to stay here forever.
"I miss Sister Jiasui. I don't even know if she's still alive."
Pei Yufeng glanced at her. "Then let's go find her."
Ji Zhaoxi looked at him in pleasant surprise. "Pei Yufeng, do you miss Sister Jiasui too?"
Pei Yufeng looked away, lowering his eyes to gaze at the desert outside without saying a word.
He just felt that she would be happier staying with them.
Shen Jiaxue noticed that whenever anyone else approached Ji Zhaoxi, Pei Yufeng would become displeased.
So, apart from showing up when Ji Zhaoxi needed water, she generally avoided appearing in front of her.
But Zhang Jili was very stupid. He seemed to realize that to Ji Zhaoxi, he might not be as useful as Shen Jiaxue, so he was constantly trying to curry favor with her.
"Sister Zhaoxi, is there anything you need? I can find it for you," Zhang Jili looked at Ji Zhaoxi expectantly.
He was really trying to be useful.
Ji Zhaoxi shook her head. "I don't need anything. Go do your own thing."
It seemed Pei Yufeng had everything she needed.
Zhang Jili immediately looked disappointed.
So he tried even harder. He handed all his supplies over to Ji Zhaoxi, took the initiative to open her cans when she was eating, and even held an umbrella for her when she went outside, fully displaying his sycophantic nature.
Shen Jiaxue, who witnessed all of this: ...
Did he really not notice how awful Pei Yufeng's expression was?
"Sister Zhaoxi, are you guys going to look for an oasis? Can I go with you? I have a great sense of direction."
"Sister Zhaoxi, you look so pretty in that white dress. The first time I saw you, I thought I was looking at an angel."
"Sister Zhaoxi..."
Ji Zhaoxi was initially embarrassed by Zhang Jili's excessive flattery, but as she kept listening, she actually felt quite pleased.
After all, the only things she used to hear were terms like fluttering moth, water faucet, and iron head.
Sitting in the corner with a dark expression, Pei Yufeng watched Ji Zhaoxi's smiling eyes, and the sour, trembling feeling in his heart spread all the way to his face.
He looked away with an ugly expression. Did she just like this kind of sweet-talker?
Her taste in men was truly terrible!
