Following in My Mother’s Footsteps: Working as a Nanny for a Wealthy Family

Chapter 50

As a salesperson in a luxury boutique, maintaining client privacy is paramount—probing into customers' personal details is strictly avoided.

Unless, of course, the customer visits frequently and a warm rapport has been established.

The reason the saleswoman asked Jiang Mo was because, after their previous interactions, she found her personality delightful—down-to-earth and approachable, without a hint of arrogance.

But let’s be honest, curiosity played the biggest role.

"Mrs. Gu? Oh no, that’s my employer. I’m actually the Gu family’s nanny," Jiang Mo replied.

A… nanny?

That answer caught the saleswoman completely off guard.

She had imagined countless possibilities, but this one never crossed her mind.

Quick on her feet, the saleswoman recalled Jiang Mo referring to the elderly man outside as "Grandpa Gu"—so he must be the patriarch of the Gu family.

"Really? I never would’ve guessed—you have such an elegant presence," the saleswoman said sweetly. "The Gu family must treat you very well."

"They do, hehe," Jiang Mo smiled, picking out two more outfits. "I’d like to try these as well."

The saleswoman nodded. "Of course, Miss Jiang. Once you’ve made your selections, I’ll bring everything to the fitting room for you."

While Jiang Mo tried on clothes, Grandpa Gu and his grandson waited outside, lounging in the seating area.

Gu Baotian remarked, "When Jiang Mo comes out, give her some proper fashion advice. You’re in the industry—put that expertise to use."

"Got it. You’re attending a birthday party, not a runway show," Gu Ye teased.

"Oh, what do you know? These high-society gatherings are full of elites, handsome men and beautiful women everywhere. I want to keep an eye out for promising young talents who might suit Jiang Mo. She ought to look her best," Grandpa Gu said, side-eyeing his grandson.

Gu Ye turned sharply, disbelief written across his face. "Grandpa! You’re planning to set Jiang Mo up?"

"Not necessarily. I’m just saying it’s an opportunity. If there’s a good match among the young crowd, why not let them mingle?" Grandpa Gu chuckled.

"Come on, she’s still so young," Gu Ye argued, leaning closer. "There’s no need to rush into matchmaking."

Heh. Getting worked up, are we?

Grandpa Gu feigned nonchalance, enjoying his grandson’s reaction. "She’s at the perfect age for dating."

Gu Ye scratched his head, flustered. "Nobody likes being set up these days. If two people click, they’ll figure it out themselves. Stay out of it, Grandpa."

"Look at you, getting all defensive over a casual remark," Grandpa Gu sipped his tea. "Don’t worry, if I find someone suitable for you too, I’ll keep you in mind. Can’t say I don’t spoil you."

Playing his grandson like a fiddle—effortless.

"Please don’t," Gu Ye waved his hands. "We’ll handle our own love lives."

Grandpa Gu decided to ease up. "Fine, fine. Handle it yourselves."

Knowing his grandfather’s mischievous streak, Gu Ye wasn’t entirely reassured. After a pause, he leaned in again. "Grandpa, can you bring an extra person to this birthday party?"

Grandpa Gu: "…"

"The invitation is for Jiang Mo. I’m only tagging along because of her," Grandpa Gu said dryly. "Our family isn’t starving—why would you need to crash?"

"Besides, aren’t you about to leave for work?"

Gu Ye deflated. Right—he was scheduled to fly out soon for a photoshoot by the sea.

Trying to save face, he muttered, "Just asking in case you two get bored. Not like I have time anyway. I’m swamped."

Grandpa Gu smirked. "Of course. Busy superstar and all."

While the two bickered outside, Jiang Mo finished changing in the fitting room.

The saleswoman had paired her outfit with high heels. Jiang Mo stepped out hesitantly, examining herself in the mirror. The sleek black dress hugged her figure elegantly.

"Grandpa Gu, what do you think of this black one?" she asked, presenting herself.

"Stunning!" Grandpa Gu praised before turning to Gu Ye. "Doesn’t she look beautiful?"

Jiang Mo usually dressed casually, so this polished, slightly alluring version of her was rare for Gu Ye to see.

"Ahem. Not bad," he said, averting his gaze to take a sip of tea.

"I think it’s nice too," Jiang Mo mused, smoothing the fabric. "I’ll try the others now."

After several more outfits, she settled on a pale green strapless gown that brightened her complexion and accentuated her grace. She adored it.

"No, that green dress is awful," Gu Ye scoffed. The straps looked flimsy, as if they’d snap any second, and the fit was so tight her waist seemed impossibly tiny.

Jiang Mo frowned, second-guessing herself. "What’s wrong with it? I think it’s lovely."

The saleswoman nodded discreetly in agreement—the dress was notoriously hard to pull off, but Jiang Mo wore it flawlessly! Still, she knew better than to intervene in a debate between customers.

Though she couldn’t help noticing the young man’s sunglasses and striking looks. He seemed familiar, but she resisted staring.

"Don’t listen to this brat. The green one’s perfect," Grandpa Gu declared. "We’re taking it!"

Jiang Mo beamed. "Then I’ll trust your judgment, Grandpa Gu. This one it is."

"The other dresses looked great too. Wrap them all up," Grandpa Gu instructed the saleswoman.

Jiang Mo waved her hands. "No, no! Just the green one is enough."

Grandpa Gu insisted, "We’re already here—why not stock up?"

"Yeah, listen to Grandpa," Gu Ye chimed in. "He’s loaded. No need to spare his wallet."

"But I have plenty of clothes, and nowhere to wear these," Jiang Mo protested. She wasn’t part of high-society circles, nor was she obsessed with luxury brands.

"Who needs a special occasion?" Gu Ye strode over, lowering his voice. "Don’t be silly. If Grandpa’s offering, take advantage. Buy as much as you want—his money’s not running out anytime soon."

Jiang Mo: "…"

What a blessing Grandpa Gu has in such a thoughtful grandson.

Perhaps to make Jiang Mo feel less self-conscious about shopping alone, Gu Ye casually browsed too. "Get me two belts," he said offhandedly.

Grandpa Gu shot back, "Pay for those yourself. You earn plenty."

Gu Ye: "…"

After some back-and-forth, Jiang Mo settled on two dresses—ones she genuinely liked.

But dresses needed accessories. Shoes, a handbag—the works.

Grandpa Gu waved grandly. "Done."

By the end, she’d lost track of the total, though it likely reached six figures.

Grandpa Gu swiped his card without hesitation—covering Gu Ye’s belts too.

The saleswoman was thrilled with the sale.

Who knew being a nanny for the wealthy came with such perks?

If only she’d known sooner—she might’ve considered a career change.

After packing up the items and handing them to Jiang Mo, the shop assistant quietly asked, "Miss Jiang, would it be possible to add each other as friends? If you have any needs or questions later, you can reach out to me directly. My name is Zhang Jing—just call me Jingjing."

"Sure!" Jiang Mo cheerfully added her as a friend.

With Jiang Mo's shopping done, it was time for Gu Baotian's clothing spree.

"Grandpa Gu, I read online that if the top is basic, the bottom shouldn’t be. Why don’t you try pairing them like this?" Jiang Mo suggested, applying the fashion tips she’d learned.

"Alright, I’ll take your advice and give it a try," Gu Baotian replied, always open to new ideas.

The luxury sales associate nearly cracked a smile upon hearing the trending phrase.

The internet’s advice was: To make an outfit look expensive, pair a basic top with a non-basic bottom—or if both are basic, go for standout accessories.

But their brand didn’t need to "look expensive"—it already was. Everyone knew its prestige.

Who would’ve thought she’d hear that phrase in-store one day?

Surprisingly, though, the mismatched combination the customer had stumbled upon actually worked—at least in her professional opinion.

Though inwardly amused, she maintained a polite smile. "Miss, the outfit you just recommended looks quite good."

Jiang Mo beamed. "Really? Then I did learn something useful online after all!"

The sales associate didn’t know how to respond—nodding felt wrong, and disagreeing wasn’t an option.

In moments like these, smiling was the safest bet.

Gu Baotian’s shopping went much faster than Jiang Mo’s. After trying on two outfits, he grew impatient. "That’s enough. I’ll take these two."

By the time he finished, Gu Ye was carrying several more shopping bags.

Since they were already out, Gu Baotian declared, "Let’s go—Grandpa’s treating you both to a nice meal today."

Free food, free food, free food!

Important things had to be said three times.

Jiang Mo realized it was like collecting cards—she’d now managed to score meals with every member of the Gu family.

Gu Ye placed the shopping bags in the trunk and pulled up the navigation. "Grandpa, where are we heading for dinner?"

Gu Baotian replied, "Search for Zhiweizhai. We’ll eat there—any objections?"

Jiang Mo nodded. "None at all. Your choices are always spot-on, Grandpa."

"Then let’s go," Gu Ye said. He’d been to Zhiweizhai before—a well-known private kitchen in Jiangcheng, run by one of his grandfather’s old friends.

The restaurant was designed in the style of a Suzhou garden, with exquisite dishes and premium ingredients.

When Jiang Mo stepped out of the car and followed the two inside, she felt like she’d entered the Grand View Garden. She’d never imagined such a place existed.

Truly, rubbing shoulders with the wealthy broadened one’s horizons—otherwise, she wouldn’t even know which direction the door faced.

"This courtyard was painstakingly built by my old friend. After dinner, we can take a stroll around," Gu Baotian explained as they walked along the corridor. "The lotus in this pond is also a rare variety."

Jiang Mo nodded. "The way the landscape blends here is really well thought out—every step offers a new view."

Having visited several times, Gu Ye found nothing particularly novel, so he simply listened to their conversation.

In the distance, two figures approached from the opposite corridor. When the two groups met, a woman on the other side removed her sunglasses and greeted them.

"Gu Ye, you’re here for dinner too?"
