Previously, none of us had jobs, and we spent our days joking around in the group chat, complaining about how hard it was to find work after graduation and how tough life had become.
But the other day, when Jiang Mo announced in the group that she was going to work as a maid for the Gu family, our little boat of friendship capsized instantly.
"We were supposed to laze around together till old age, but you went and sneaked off alone!"
Jiang Mo put down the adorable golden tabby cat and walked toward the villa’s exit. "Come on, follow me and see how the other half lives."
She couldn’t take photos inside the villa, but the exterior was fair game, so she casually snapped a few shots of the outdoor scenery and sent them to the group.
The Gu family villa was situated on a low hill, part of an exclusive neighborhood where Jiangcheng’s elite lived.
The view and scenery were absolutely breathtaking.
Li Wan'er chimed in, "Tsk, looks about the same as my family’s villa—just a few floors and a big yard. Actually, our yard is even bigger. The only difference is the fancier decor. We’ve got a whole mountain too, you know."
Li Wan'er’s family was from a spice-loving province in the southwest, known for its fruit production. They owned vast orchards and were major fruit growers. Back in college, the dorm was often stocked with fresh fruit shipped straight from her family’s farm.
Jiang Mo had visited Li Wan'er’s home during a trip and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, your place is definitely a mansion too."
Zhang Qingqing was practically green with envy. "Wahhh! Weren’t we supposed to let the rich lead the poor to prosperity? Boss Jiang, don’t forget us when you make it big! You’re my only connection in high society now. By the way… does the Gu family need any more maids?"
Li Wan'er backtracked, "Okay, okay, I spoke too soon earlier. So… does the Gu family need more maids?"
These girls were truly driven mad by the job hunt.
They kept saying that if they didn’t find work soon, their families would disown them.
Jiang Mo typed furiously on her phone. "They don’t need anyone else right now, but don’t worry—if any opportunities come up, I’ll keep you in mind."
"Don’t forget me!" Guo Yanni chimed in.
Zhang Qingqing sighed, "You’re lucky—you’ve got a family business to inherit. Unlike me, stuck at home being a nuisance. I’ve even considered doing risqué livestreams, but turns out that path’s already overcrowded…"
During work hours, they indulged in some well-timed slacking.
Just as the banter was heating up, Wang Xia popped into the chat. "Jiang Mo, get ready. Madam is heading out soon, and you’ll be accompanying her."
"Got it! Your bag-carrying assistant is on duty!" Jiang Mo adapted to her new role with ease.
The daily life of a wealthy matriarch mostly revolved around childcare, socializing, networking, self-improvement, spa treatments, and vacations.
As a newbie, Jiang Mo had no idea what Su Yunjin had planned for their outing.
Wang Xia wasn’t sure either but reminded Jiang Mo that since this was her first time accompanying Madam, she needed to stay sharp, observant, and quick on her feet.
Su Yunjin emerged after her makeup and styling session, looking every bit the elegant noblewoman as she descended the stairs with effortless grace.
Jiang Mo followed closely behind, all the way to the garage.
"Jiang Mo, do you have a driver’s license? Can you drive?" Su Yunjin asked, holding her handbag.
Since driving classes were practically mandatory for college students these days, Jiang Mo had gotten her license a while back—though she hadn’t touched a steering wheel since.
"I do, but I wouldn’t dare drive you. You probably wouldn’t dare ride with me either," Jiang Mo replied honestly, hoping her lack of skill was implied.
Su Yunjin paused. "…I’ll drive. You take the passenger seat."
Jiang Mo scrambled into the car, marveling at the luxurious interior. The seats were plush, and there wasn’t a hint of that weird car smell.
Unlike some of the cabs she’d taken, which reeked and made her carsick.
A glance at the dashboard revealed their destination: SKP. So today’s main quest was shopping.
When they arrived, Su Yunjin moved to grab her bag, only to find Jiang Mo already waiting by the car, grinning and holding it for her.
That girl had impressively white teeth.
A smile like that belonged in a toothpaste commercial.
Su Yunjin hadn’t brought Jiang Mo along for any particular reason—she was just bored and wanted company.
With the girl tagging along, there was no need to call up her usual socialite friends.
They headed straight for the high-end boutique, where the manager greeted them eagerly. "Madam Gu, please relax in the VIP lounge. We’ll bring the latest arrivals to you."
Then, turning to a staff member, she ordered, "Clear the store. No more customers for now."
While speaking, the manager discreetly sized up Jiang Mo, who trailed behind Su Yunjin.
Young, unfamiliar, dressed plainly—she couldn’t quite place the girl’s status, so she settled for a polite smile.
Unfazed by the scrutiny, Jiang Mo strode confidently into the VIP lounge.
Su Yunjin lounged comfortably on a plush leather sofa while a sales associate promptly served tea, pastries, and the season’s latest catalog.
As the designated bag-holder, Jiang Mo stood stiffly beside the sofa like a mannequin.
Su Yunjin flipped through the catalog, occasionally frowning or raising an eyebrow. Whenever her gaze lingered on a page, the associate immediately launched into a pitch.
"Jiang Mo, what do you think of this set?" Su Yunjin turned and blinked at Jiang Mo, who stood rigidly in place. "What are you doing back there? Playing guard dog? Or is this sofa not big enough for both of us?"
Officially, Jiang Mo was hired as a maid, but Su Yunjin treated her more like a relative’s kid—no strict hierarchy here.
Back in the day, when other employers had tried poaching Wang Xia, Su Yunjin had fought tooth and nail to keep her.
Jiang Mo, meanwhile, had already zoned out. Luxury goods held zero appeal for her—not because she couldn’t afford them (well, that was also true), but because she couldn’t fathom why clothes with a logo slapped on cost so much.
Real luxury? Nothing could beat the treasures from their ancestors’ era.
Her mind wandered to lunch options instead—bubble tea, roujiamo, maybe some stinky tofu noodles? It’d been ages since she’d had those.
Snapped back to reality, she hurriedly plopped onto the sofa.
She wasn’t stupid. If she could sit, why stand?
"I think the green set looks better. But honestly, you’ve got the kind of presence that could make a potato sack look chic," Jiang Mo said with genuine admiration.
"Good eye. I was leaning toward the green too. I used to model, you know," Su Yunjin remarked smugly, circling a few more items before heading to the fitting room.
While Madam Gu tried on clothes, another sales associate refilled Jiang Mo’s tea. "Would you like to browse some pieces as well?"
"Nah, I’m broke. Can’t afford any of this," Jiang Mo replied bluntly.
The associate stiffened. She’d assumed the plainly dressed girl might be an understated heiress, but nope—just genuinely penniless.
But high-end luxury salespeople do have some tricks up their sleeves. She didn’t let her expression falter and simply smiled, saying, "No problem at all. If you see anything you’d like to try, just let me know. Here are some snacks—please enjoy."
Jiang Mo eyed the pastries and fruits on the table, which were exquisitely presented and clearly of high quality.
Since they were laid out, they were meant to be eaten.
So she unceremoniously picked up a fork and dug in.
How to describe it?
One bite in, and the texture was incredibly smooth. The rich creaminess exploded in her mouth, the flavor so intense it reached the roof of her palate, even filling her nostrils with its luxurious aroma.
The pastries in luxury boutiques were top-notch, though the portions were small—just one bite each. Before Su Yunjin even finished trying on clothes, Jiang Mo had unconsciously polished off an entire plate of petits fours.
"Um, could I get another plate of desserts?" Jiang Mo praised, "Your sweets are amazing."
"Of course."
When the second plate arrived, Jiang Mo didn’t immediately eat it. Instead, she snapped a few photos and posted them on her social media.
Ding-ding-dong—messages flooded in on WeChat.
Li Wan'er: Feed me a bite!
Zhang Qingqing: Living the high life now that you’ve entered the world of the wealthy! Ugh, take me with you!
Mom’s angry voice: Stop indulging yourself! Don’t just eat—focus on your work!
Jiang Mo giggled, replying to messages between bites. By the time she leisurely finished the treats and sipped her floral tea, Su Yunjin finally returned from her fitting session.
With a wave of her hand, Su Yunjin declared, "Have all the clothes I just tried on delivered to my place—except that white dress."
"You’ve been waiting so long—you must be starving. Let’s go for lunch."
Jiang Mo let out a small burp and trotted obediently behind Su Yunjin.
Twenty minutes later, Su Yunjin’s Mercedes G-Class rolled to a stop in a slightly run-down alley.
"You’re sure the food you recommended is here? Did the navigation mess up?" Su Yunjin rolled down the window, eyeing the shabby streets skeptically.
Jiang Mo hopped out of the passenger seat, brimming with confidence. "No mistake, ma’am. Trust me—this place is packed with amazing eats."
